A recent observational report is suggesting a potential connection between the use of Viagra and the risk of melanoma. The report in the Journal of the American Medical Association claims a plausible connection, based on the biology of melanoma and the mechanism of action of Viagra.
Whether this connection in fact exists is unclear at this point, and this study is suggests further investigation is needed. That said, it is important to understand that this potential connection is no greater than childhood sun exposure & melanoma development, so it is not an extreme risk, just a statistical one. In addition, association does not prove causation, and this study just notes an association at this point, but with the headline as I’ve written it, it would not surprise me to hear that there are exaggerated claims in the name of ‘getting headlines’ that capture attention.
For now, we reserve judgement and I don’t advise avoiding Viagra if it is an effective medication for ED.
