When I heard that bacon was on the defensive…I became defensive. Though I love bacon, the reason I was upset is that I knew there was an agenda behind the criticism of meat as incredibly unhealthy for us. There are several agendas that motivate this attack, not the least of which is the fact that vegetarians believe it is ‘self evident’ that meat is just ‘bad’ for a person.
While I think there are pro’s and con’s to all foods found in nature or produced by man, it is best to keep this concern in perspective. In a NY Times opinion piece, we find out that concerns about climate are playing a part in motivating the ‘anti bacon’ movement.
Certainly there are arguments to be made about the scientific validity of meat’s health impacts, but just because it jives with your prejudices, don’t let the headlines fool you. As Twain remarked: “It’s not what you don’t know that gets you in trouble…it’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”
